Going to Jamaica, how do I avoid roaming charges?

all i would do was turn it on airplane mode but to b sure i would go to sprint and ask them to turn off all communications we had to call some number when we went and no one was charged beacuse we had a group of 16 people go all under the same phone plan and no one was charged
